Understory is in the process of deploying the most comprehensive weather network in the world. The Dallas, Denver, Kansas City, and St. Louis areas are exposed to a wide variety of weather extremes, which make them ideal locations for Understory’s weather stations. If you are located in one of these areas and are interested in hosting a weather station, please contact us!
In exchange for the use of your facility, we will give you unlimited free access to the weather data generated by your station and pay the school, or district a quarterly payment for the roof space used by the station.
Weather station data is accessed through our online portal and includes real-time temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation information, in addition to 24-hour forecasts, historical data, and extreme weather alerts. This unique data can be easily blended in with your teachers’ existing curriculum, adding opportunities for the practical application of math and science concepts.
Since the weather station is powered exclusively by its solar panels and uses a non-penetrating mount that does not affect the roof’s integrity, all we need is an easily accessible, flat roof to install your weather station.
Our weather stations are the very heart of our solution. Each is like a dedicated scientist taking real-time measurements out in the field, including hail, wind, rain, temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, and derived measurements such as wind chill, heat index, dew point temperature, and wind gusts.
Understory detects rain, hail, wind, and other weather events where the risk to life and property is the greatest—directly at the earth’s surface. Because of their ground truth detection method, Understory has set a new industry standard for weather data resolution and fidelity that far exceeds traditional weather centers, which collect data by analyzing conditions observed in the atmosphere. By providing real-time datasets and graphical views of the movement and intensity of weather events, they are able to provide more valuable insights and early risk-detection alerts.
The data applications for Understory's sensors are enormous, as $485 billion of the U.S. economy fluctuates with weather. This new, sensor-enabled big data will impact insurance, agriculture, broadcast, and many other industries.
